Money Clip

My name is Daniel Francisco Castaneda. I have opened this site for many reasons. Mainly so that I could share what I love to do with any and everyone that is interested.  I wish I could give my stuff away, but hey, a guy's gotta make a living.

I was born in Corpus Christi, Texas. My primary artistic influence as a child was my uncle, Gerard Cantú. My uncle got me interested in drawing, from comic books nonetheless. It was probably the only way to hold my attention. I started my "formal" training in the 6th grade when I took my first art class. My interest and participation in art classes lasted from then through high school, learning various disciplines. Here's where the contradiction begins...I liked math and physics...alot.

Originally I was an electrical engineering major at The University of Texas at Austin. After a couple of semesters of not being happy with my choice of major I decided to switch to a studio art major. I involved myself with classes in painting, ceramics, and printmaking. It was further into my studies that I looked to enhance my drawing ability, and to see what possibilities watercolor had to offer. I developed the majority of my drawing ability under Professor Troy Brauntuch and discovered the enjoyment of watercolor under Professor Bill Wyman. I took a seriously profound interest in nonferrous sculpture/jewelry classes under the instruction of Professor Thelma Coles. It was in this field that I earned the Burdine Anderson Giese Endowed Scholarship.  I think it was the combination of creativity and left-brain control (the engineering side of me) that kept me so interested in this medium.

I graduated from UT in 2000 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art. I got married in 2003 to Yvonne Garza. Although Yvonne was not very pleased our breakfast nook became my studio she was happy that I found contentment in that corner…I now have an entire room to myself.

It was only just a little while ago that I added leatherworking to my repertoire.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dennis Guerra, Jim Ford, Wayne Decker, and George Hurst for introducing me to the leatherworking craft, and for the continued help in furthering my abilities and knowledge of the seemingly endless possibilities of leather.
